Tobago, small as it is, proved to be irresistible to major European powers. It changed hands more than 30 times until 1814 when it bowed its head to the British government. In 1888 Tobago linked with Trinidad in a single administrative unit and in 1962 both islands became independent from Britain. Rich culture makes Tobago an interesting island and provides you the visitor with a variety of attractions to enjoy.Tobago is known as the unspoiled paradise of the Caribbean. Hang out at Pigeon Point and join a crew on a boat during the day and party during the night. Easter Period Local goat and crab race celebrations at Buccoo, and Mount Pleasant. May Angostura Yachting World Sailing Regatta: Another great event that attracts sailing boats from literally every where. Crown Point is the place to be if you would like to race as well. In the evening it is party time. July - August Tobago Heritage Festival: This is Tobago's annual celebration of the island's local customs and traditions. The festival is a two week event from the middle of July to the beginning of August. Some favorites are: "Old time wedding procession", the folk tales and superstitions in "Les Coteaux", music and dance and food such as curried crab and dumplings. It is a very popular celebration that encompasses virtually the entire island. Early August Great Fete weekend. A weekend full of parties and fetes "Tobago Style". Late August Carib Great Race: This powerboat race starts in Trinidad and ends at Store bay in Tobago. Huge crowds gather hours earlier, enjoying themselves by dancing and partying. Small and big powerboats are catered to in separate categories and prizes of cash and trophies are awarded to the winners. September Tobago Fest.
